Accreditation for Energy Management Systems
Accreditation for energy management systems refers to the process of evaluating and certifying that an organization has a management system in place to minimize its energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Energy management systems are designed to help organizations identify and manage their energy consumption and emissions, and to implement strategies to reduce their energy use and environmental impact.
To obtain accreditation for an energy management system, an organization must typically demonstrate that it has the necessary policies, processes, and procedures in place to manage its energy consumption and emissions effectively. This may include demonstrating that the organization has appropriate staffing levels, that it follows established best practices and guidelines, and that it has systems in place to monitor and improve its energy performance.
There are several different accreditation standards that may be applicable to energy management systems, depending on the specific type of organization and the industry in which it operates. For example, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has developed a standard for energy management, ISO 50001, which provides guidance on the principles and processes for managing energy consumption and emissions effectively.
Obtaining accreditation for an energy management system can be beneficial for several reasons. It can help to demonstrate the organization's competence and credibility to regulatory bodies, customers, and other stakeholders, and may be required in order to qualify for certain contracts or business opportunities. Accreditation can also help to improve the energy performance of the organization's operations, and may lead to increased efficiency and cost savings.
A Management Systems Certification Body must be able to demonstrate its competence to assess and certify an energy management system that conforms to ISO 50001.
Its overall aim is to put in place systems and processes to provide significant energy usage reductions resulting in an associated decline in costs and greenhouse gas emission achievable through the systematic management of energy.
The standard is consistent with the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 management systems presently adopted throughout the industry and this makes it easier for organizations to integrate energy management into their overall efforts to improve quality and environmental management.
Accreditation is the means by which an authoritative body (U.S. Accreditation Inc.) gives formal recognition that an organization (the CB) is competent to carry out specific tasks. Accreditation provides assurance to customers that the CB operates according to internationally accepted criteria.
Naturally, an organization considering certification wants to know about the reputation and competence of the CB it selects. The organization wants assurance that the CB is competent to evaluate its systems and that, no matter where they're located, customers will value the CB's judgment.
Unaccredited CBs may not operate according to international requirements. Unscrupulous CBs may offer a certificate without an audit or any real understanding of an organization's processes. Such a certificate is of questionable value for the certified organization and its customers.
A Certification Body applying for ISO 50001 accreditation must conform to ISO/IEC 17021, ISO 50003 and other additional International requirements as detailed in Specific Requirements for Accreditation for Energy Management Systems Scheme.
